A year or two ago, I read a Film Noir Buff article titled “English Pocket Squares” in which FNB dissimilated the pocket square practices of Americans and Brits. This article focused on one topic in particular - the unstylish inclination of American men to match their pocket square with their tie or shirt. While I don’t agree with the author’s diagnostic opinion of neurosis, I do agree that there is certainly room for a dose of studied nonchalance when it comes to pocket squares.
A pocket square should quite literally look like it happened to get into the suit’s chest pocket accidentally or was left over from ten outfits ago… The more carelessly plopped into your pocket, the more points you score from your peers.
The photo above is a great example of this English nonchalance, the addition of the haphazardly stuffed pocket square births a semblance of unregimentedness (not a real word) and unnarrowmindedness (a real word) for this man - traits which identify him as a friendly and approachable person.
